Robin Olds, who would later become famous in Vietnam as the beloved leader of the wolf Pack flying F-4 Phantoms, first become an ace in World War Two as a young Lieutenant. His first two kills came when he stumbled across a pair of Focke-Wulfs on the deck after becoming separated from his group during a low altitude fighter sweep. The Fw 190s crossed in front of Olds' P-38 and did not spot him until he slid onto their tails and shot the trailer down. After sharp chase and some wild low-altitude flying, he got the second one as well. Shortly after this incident, the 479th transitioned to P-51s and Olds would score a total of twelve kills during the war.
